The owners of this new custom built home did a careful job reflecting the style of their Kingsway neighbourhood streetscape.  But out in front, the couple wanted something a little bit different that subtly expressed their more modern aesthetic.  Their builder had suggested an armour stone bordered driveway that opened up to the porch, but it didn’t feel right to them.  I believe strongly in designing front gardens for walkers as well as drivers, and so I developed a design with clean contemporary lines that incorporates a generous front walk adjacent to the driveway.  A series of large irregularly staggered landings descend from the front porch.  The precast paving complements the colours of the home’s façade and enabled the owners to achieve the look they wanted with what was left of their reno budget.  The remainder of the property was planted with shrubs and grasses in the front half, helping to screen a more private open area by the house, where the owners often enjoy the late afternoon light.
